Kamelot keyboardist Oliver Palotai should be familiar to anyone following the metal scenes for the past decade and a half, if not musically then at least through name-recognition. While we're awaiting for the next Kamelot album to surface sometime in 2010, Mr. Palotai has decided to spend the time in between working on his side project Sons Of Seasons, whose debut album "Gods Of Vermin" is now under review consideration here. Now, the thing about side projects is that they rarely cover much new ground in comparison to the main project, and as such, they merely seem like ways to pass time just because you can't release two or three albums per year with your main band.

Although Sons Of Seasons is not a direct Kamelot clone, the influence and ideas are still undeniable; the band merges together progressive metal and power metal whilst adding a few symphonic overtones in the process. Metalium vocalist Henning Basse is handling the vocals here, so you can pretty much expect an overload of vibrato throughout, although he varies his expression with some metallish yelling and screaming as well. Few tracks also feature Simone Simons of Epica to throw the female high pitch goth metal vocals into the mix. It works reasonably well, but again, this isn't something you wouldn't have heard done better many times before.

There are a number of tracks on "Gods Of Vermin" that sound decent, but really none that excel in any way. Kamelot fans will surely appreciate the intense guitar solos filling the vast soundscape, as well as Palotai's trademark keyboards in places, but overall this record is pretty boring. Only for genre-enthusiasts.
