Evolution Through Revolution

Grindcore legends Brutal Truth had been gone for about 10 years before their reunion in 2006. They got back together to play some shows in promotion of their "Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom/Kill Trend Suicide" compilation release, and noticed how much fun they were having and decided to record a new album. That makes "Evolution Through Revolution" their first studio album since 1997, and unlike so many other instances in the past few years where old bands are being reawakened only to disappoint all older fans, Brutal Truth have absolutely outdone themselves on the new record.

I didn't appreciate their older work so much because of two reasons: firstly, the shitty production made sure that you couldn't hear almost anything that was going on, and secondly, most of their songs lacked the same kind of conviction and unpredictability as a band like Converge or The Dillinger Escape Plan. But on "Evolution Through Revolution", it seems the band has become more like said two bands, only crazier and more dissonant. Dissonance, dissonance, dissonance, that's all this record's about. It's music for the attention-span challenged; short, one or two minute bursts of insane chaos executed with abysmal precision and ferocity of a freight train out of control. Brutal Truth does not let go of the listener for a moment. They flatten the listener with a two-ton truck, that is after they've already invented a way of attaching a hundred cheese graters into a lawn mower and mercilessly used the doomsday machine on your body - twice. The type of abrasive wall of life-ending noise that comes out of Brutal Truth's instruments is indeed hard to describe, but one thing is for sure, they put every contemporary claiming to be heavy and chaotic to shame with any single track from this monstrous release.

But as is always the case with extreme metal albums, it's not going to be for everyone. There will be a huge number of readers even at this magazine who will condemn "Evolution Through Revolution" to be just meaningless noise. Hell, I would've called the record meaningless noise a few years ago. It takes time to appreciate such calculated insanity and even then you're not sure to 'get it', whatever the heck that means. But if you've evolved into the stage where extreme metal starts to sound good...well, prepare to be blown away by this one, despite the few shortcomings the unit still has.
