Mothra

Dyes

The second album of Mothra, titled "Dyes" is the second of two Polish releases I've gotten to know over the past couple of weeks, and by far and large it is the best one. The band plays a bleak, math-fused brand of hardcore, taking cues from established names like Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

What sets them apart especially from the latter is the more outspoken tendency to lift the foot off the gas pedal, and instead pound away in slow-mo, the resulting atmosphere making thoughts fly to the merciless and monumental soundscapes of The Ocean. The vocalwork is pretty much limited to one marauding and indecipherable howl, but then I guess that's also what's the most fitting for this kind of music.

Personally, I find that Mothra are more enjoyable when they do rest their foot on the pedal again though, and what I feel bars them from absolute success on this record is that they separate the fast and the slow too much. Listen for instance to "Octarine", which seems to drone on and on forever, especially compared to both its predecessor, the cool "Hooloovoo", and the following "Grut", the opening of which is arguably the most memorable moment of the record. What I'm missing is the fear of being assaulted by a fast part just before I'm completely put to sleep by one of the slow ones, or the nice sensation of feeling a crawl gaining momentum until it becomes a raging thunder.

It seems however that for the most part, Mothra are satisfied with doing either or, and while the faster songs are quite enjoyable for themselves, overall the album has little going for it in terms of memory making moments. It's a decent and completely believable burst of off-angle aggression and its heart seems to be in the right place, but still there's something needed before Mothra can really raise eyebrows the way the frontrunners of their genre can. While they go looking for that something though, "Dyes" should be sure to entertain those on the prowl for anything mathcore.
