International Superheroes Of Hardcore

HPxHC EP

For those still not in the know, International Superheroes Of Hardcore is the hardcore moniker of New Found Glory, featuring all the members of the band, just with Jordan on guitar and Chad on vocals. Their debut album "Takin' It Ova" took the scene with a blast when it arrived together with the melodic hardcore inspired New Found Glory EP "Tip Of The Iceberg", partly because it was a much needed slap in the face of the all-too serious hardcore scene, and partly because its songs were freaking hilarious, or how else would you describe an awesome song with a breakdown about wearing a seat belt? I didn't honestly think they'd be back this quick though, but here they are, four new songs released on a new EP called "HPxHC".

This, we're told on the opening track carrying the same title, stands for 'Harry Potter is Hardcore' after an intro-debate with the band whether or not Harry Potter is emo or hardcore. "Keeping It Real"'s title gives its message away, and additional hilariousness arrives in the form of "Batman's A Deadman", where the band screams "Batman is a dead man! Hardcore is alive and we're coming to take Gotham City back, so start running". Finally, the EP closes with "Too Legit To Quit", another hardcore anthem in the vein of "ISHC Theme Song": "The Amazing Breakdown, Mr Mosh, Chugga Chugga, Sgt. Soy, Cpt. Straightedge, who are we? The one, the only ISHC! If you ever need us, we'll be there..."

Only six and a half minutes pass before the EP finishes, but that was to be expected considering their full length was only about 23 minutes long. Nonetheless, I'm left with a mildly disappointment feeling. The songs just aren't as good as on their debut album, nor are they as funny. The Batman song is annoying at best, and "Keepin' It Real" just has the band on autopilot. It's not terrible, but it's a far cry from the debut.
