Minkus

Minkus

A few times each decade a band produces what can only be described as an epic record. The kind of album that changes the way you look at music and sometimes even how you see the world. Could the Minkus self-titled album be that album? By no means whatsoever, it is probably the most boring and uninteresting record I have ever laid ears to in many years. The only thing this album achieves is to prove that it is possible to make nu-metal that for the majority of the album is more tedious than Limp Bizkit.

The most annoying fact about "Minkus" is without a doubt the lack of English lyrics. Except for a few lines here and there everything is in Spanish, which is a great way not to get your message across in most parts of Europe. The problems become more and more apparent throughout the record as you begin to realise how vocal driven the music really is. Add to this that the vocals don't do the music any favors as the pronunciation of almost every word seems to work directly against the flow in the music. If all this wasn't enough, when there finally is some English lyrics, they are so meaningless that you would have an easier time understanding the Spanish lyrics, even if you don't speak the language.

Meaningless is also the word to describe the music itself. Minkus seems to take one riff, then loose all sense of direction and purposelessly push the music in every direction, tearing the songs to shreds. The band only achieves to get just a little better than boring on three - maximum four - occasions throughout the whole album. These moments are brief and just when you start hoping for something that's at least decent to listen to, the band falls back on more mindless riffing for a painfully long time. It's amazing that Minkus can have this much heavy riffing without ever finding just a fraction of edge. The first two or three tracks just seem a bit dull but when you put 15 songs on a record, most of them at least two minutes too long, you end up reaching new levels of boredom.

It could be that I'm missing the whole point of Minkus, though I very much doubt it. This is nu-metal for the sake of nu-metal. You can from time to time hear the band trying to go in a more interesting direction but these moments are all too brief and cannot save the reocrd from being just another album in a genre that should have died all too long ago.
