Opposite Self

Almost Over

Opposite Self is a French hard rock band with their roots arising from bands such as Disturbed, Alice in Chains and other 90ies post-grunge scenesters. They follow a simple song structure similar to the aforementioned. So now the question is, do these rocking Frenchmen have anything that makes them worth a listen?

Well, not really. I do admit that if the band would use some resources on production, which is alarmingly bad, it would have made some difference. Maybe. The lead singer Mars has an ear for good melodies, it's just too bad that he can't sing.

There are some fundamental problems with Opposite Self. They aren't nearly as good musicians as they should be, for example nn "Passenger", the band simply destroys itself. The drummer is untight as hell, the singer misses the basic flair for music and his expression isn't developed enough for recording, and it really sounds like he is singing like he has a potato in his mouth. Might I suggest singing lessons for future development? Or just English lessons could make a great difference. I've sadly had my laughs here and there because of his poor spoken English.

All this being said, you should have some sympathy for Opposite Self, cause they are trying really hard, and on the passages where Mars is screaming and shouting his lungs out instead of singing, there is actually good energy, especially because of his thick French voice. To end things in a respectful manner there are two things to be said. Firstly, maybe someone just should have told them to rehearse some more before making a promo with 6 songs, and secondly, they should sing in French to reach a higher level of authenticity. Right now it just seems like they are trying to be their idols, instead of just being Opposite Self [I guess that's why they're called that? -Ed.].
