Bad Luck Charms

Bad Luck Charms

With one foot in old school punk rock a la Ramones and another in straight forward rock \'n\' roll, Bad Luck Charms are sure to awake nostalgic trips along the memory lane in at least the older reader-base of this magazine. Their self-titled debut album is a timely reminder even in the midst of today\'s thousands of genre definitions, music can still be made out of simple riffs and a no-frills, have a good time atmosphere.

When the songs aren\'t busy giving gasoline-smeared nods to the simplistic three chord punk riffs made famous by Ramones and The Clash, you might imagine the band being a spin-off from a band like Rancid, best seen during the numerous short guitar solos the band injects into the otherwise straightforward instrumental framework. Especially the raunchy vocals hint a little bit in this direction.

Only once does the band cross the three minute mark during the album. On one hand this makes the album short, lasting only just over 25 minutes, but it allows just the right length for songs. Prepare to reduce your stress levels with the three chord approach that for once isn\'t about who can play fastest - medium tempo suits Bad Luck Charms just fine.

Listening to the record makes you feel like the 70s punk rock revolution never died - it just contracted back to the grass roots levels where it all started from. Consequently you shouldn\'t be surprised to feel that the band does sound kind of outdated in 2008, which is really my only grudge with it. Bad Luck Charms may not be starting a revolution with their debut album, but no one can deny that the record is equivalent to a positively relaxed atmosphere, something that the punk scene has been missing for a while.
