Billy Talent II

Since the Canadian veterans in Billy Talent broke through to the mainstream with their critically acclaimed epinymous debut, fans have been dying to hear how the bands' follow up would sound like. Now, three years later, Billy Talent are finally ready to give the fans what they want, and they've done so with their new full length, simply titled "Billy Talent II".

Back on the first album, Billy Talent carved a place for themselves in most peoples minds with their infectious and different take on punk rock. On II, it's hard to say their style has changed. The band still plays extremely catchy songs with explosive choruses, that have a raw edge to them. I'd recommend a song for you to listen to as an example, but actually, just pick out a random one. Every song is unmistakeably Billy Talent regardless if it's about religion, the music industry or one of the other issues the band comments on during the span of this album. More than half the songs on the CD are potential single hits, and will find their way into your memory and stay there for quite some time.

Even though Billy Talent has clearly refined their sound a bit on the new CD, I don't think there's that much innovation going on here. This is basically more of the same stuff you either loved or hated back on the previous record, and I'll leave it to you, to decide how good/bad that is. What bugs me about this record is, that even though there isn't really a single bad song on it, there isn't really any spectacular ones either. Songs like "Devil In A Midnight Mass", "The Red Flag" and "Where Is The Line" stand out above the rest, for being particularly good examples of what's good about Billy Talent, but they never really get to that point where you just have to sit back and think; Fuck.. This is amazing!

To sum things up, Billy Talent delivers a solid package of music played the unique way only Billy Talent plays it. A package full of songs that will get you humming, singing and dancing, and then probably be forgotten, without ever really making it into the "Awesome Song Hall of Fame" in your mind. Good but not great.
