Mike Patton

Mondo Cane

Mike Patton. A songwriter, composer, producer, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist, voice-actor, and the lead singer of Faith No More. The guy with at least a dozen different projects other than his main band, some genius, some bordering lunacy. Of all those side projects, the most insane one must be "Mondo Cane". Not because Mike Patton screams his lungs out in an uncontrollable fashion or pretends to be a hamster for two albums (see Hemophiliac). But because it is Mike Patton with a 30-man strong orchestra and the Italian superstar within Jazz and classical music, Roy Paci, reinterpreting 50s, 60s, and 70s ITALIAN pop classics.

That's right, classics like "Ore D'Amore" get the Mike Patton treatment. They're fine-tuned and re-interpreted here and there (orchestra treatment), but the melodies are essentially still the same as in those songs you hear in EVERY ROMANTIC COMEDY which happens to have a dinner scene in some Italian restaurant. So in some way these songs are stereotypical Italian pop culture from back in the day, but surprisingly enough, you should be able to recognize most of these oldies fairly quickly, because they've been overplayed across the world as a symbol for fine wine and dining in the shadow of the Pisa tower or the Colosseum. The best part about it? It somehow, unbelievably, actually works. Only Mr. Patton could get away with something as clinically lunatic as this project.
