Preaching Venom

Here's another example that metal is alive and well even in such politically repressive places like the Middle East. We've previously seen Bilocate from Lebanon garner album-of-the-year nominations from various publications around the world, and now it seems to be Dubai, UAE based Nervecell's turn. Their third album "Preaching Venom" was originally released back in April 2008, when it attracted the attention of Lifeforce Records who signed the band and decided to re-release the ten track album.

What we're dealing with here is extreme metal with hints of technical death metal in the mix. Think Behemoth, Nile and so forth. Translated into practice, you can expect constant double pedal pummeling on the background, hyper-precise drumming courtesy of Psycroptic's Dave Haley, and guttural growls that alone make sure this album's not gonna be for everyone. It also seems that not even Middle East has been spared from breakdowns as you'll notice from the lengthy chugging on "Flesh & Memories", but that's okay, because it helps give the album a modern feel (but not deathcore, rest assured), which is also brought by the extremely dynamic and technical leads.

I have to say though that even though the album is heavy, it's not as monster heavy or directly despicable in nature like the excellent Cattle Decapitation effort "The Harvest Floor" earlier this year. What I want from my extreme metal is an absolutely immense sound that crushes me to the ground and doesn't let go until the last track stops playing. While there are sections present here that do just that, as a whole the album feels a little...anonymous. The individual tracks don't make as strong of an impression as I was hoping for, even if you can't directly call their brand of death metal bad by any means. Still, this is the first time in as long as I can remember that I'm feeling a little disappointed over a Lifeforce Records release, but check out the highlight tracks mentioned below and decide for yourself. Be warned though, this is extreme metal so it won't be for everyone.
