Fear Falls Burning

Frenzy Of The Absolute

*BOOM*, bass drum... *silence*... *BOOM CHING* - bass-drum and, wait for it, cymbal this time as well! Repeat for a minute. Then enter feedback, distortion or whatever it is that\'s slowly fading in from the background. Oh, and a minute and a half into \"Frenzy Of The Absolute\" by Fear Falls Burning, what\'s that I hear? Three or four notes on the guitar?

We\'re now well beyond the two minute mark and the amount of drum work we\'ve gotten is equivalent to three or four seconds on a punk album; even less on a metal album.

-----long pause where nothing really happens-----

Hi guys, it\'s me, the reviewer, checking in again. We\'re now at five minutes into the song and there are only two changes so far from what\'s described above: the distortion has become noticeably louder and the three or four note guitar \'riff\' is looping endlessly. I\'ll update you guys again once something else happens.

------------

Eight minutes to the song now. There\'s some sort of haunting melody that\'s getting louder and louder on top of the distortion. The painstakingly slow *BOOM CHING* bass/cymbal drum pattern has been on a loop ever since the beginning, and even as I\'m passing the 10 minute mark it doesn\'t show any signs of stopping, although more (alien) noise is now coming in, possibly from some sort of synthesizers or something? At eleven minutes now. Everything had been getting louder and louder and louder, until it all stopped without any warning. The sound was cut completely, the drums were removed, and a different sort of haunted feedback is now slowly starting to fade in, becoming louder and louder....you can guess the rest.

Let it be no secret that I\'m a big fan of experimental music. I adore bands that try to push the envelope in whatever direction they can. But seriously though, the kind of ultra ultra ultra ultra spacey experimentalism that Fear Falls Burning showcases on \"Frenzy Of The Absolute\" is nothing but ridiculous. How many of you readers can confess to having a) enough time and b) enough patience to sit through 21 minutes of a single song where the only noteworthy moment is the unexpected cut of all sound that had s l o w l y been building up for half of the song (11 minutes!)? Somehow it didn\'t surprise me at all to find involvement by the dude from Switchblade on this record.

So what\'s the lesson of the day? Experimentalism is great, but bands must understand that there are limits to it as well, no matter how wrong and paradoxical that might sound.
